An outdoor space is more than just an open yard or a small patio to take a break in now and then; just like our interior decor, the way in which a person decorates their exterior can say a great deal about themselves as well. Some view their backyard as an entertainment space, while for others it’s a quiet sanctuary from the rest of the world. We all have different takes to how we let our personalities shine through in design in though we all have distinct differences, your zodiac sign offers exciting insights into your personality and your design preferences. Check out your sign below and see how you tend to decorate your outdoor space.

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18)

When it comes to creating an eccentric atmosphere, you can count on an Aquarius to come through. They enjoy connecting to the outdoors, given all the creative energy and inspiration that exists there. While they might spring for more unique features if they have space and funds to do so, the focal points will involve mix and match thrift store finds that somehow work together. They like to reuse items and give them a new purpose, and that has a story within them. They’ll also invest in a fire pit for those intriguing conversations with their friends that tend to go long into the night.

Pisces (February 19 to March 20)

Dreamy and idealistic Pisces love being out in the fresh air, so decorating their outdoor space is a must. They don’t like limits placed on them, and they want to bring their ideas to life in whatever way possible. If they don’t have access to water in their backyard, they’ll find a way to incorporate it—a small fountain or even a cascading waterfall will be a fixture. Pair that with light tones that make the area feel larger than it is and a porch swing for when they have company, and they won’t have any complaints. It wouldn’t be surprising for them to include a hammock or some other suspended seating to kick their feet up and add some whimsy.

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

Those whose sign falls in Aries can’t help but want to be outdoors. They hate having limitations and want plenty of space to release all the pent up energy they endlessly seem to have. When it comes to decorating, they’ll be drawn to bold colors that reflect their energetic mindsets (think shades of red or orange). Their primary focus will be on ensuring the space is as open-concept as possible. If they have a backyard, they want it to feel like an extension of their home, not a separate area. If they’re working with something smaller, they’ll lean towards mostly lighter colors and arrange any furniture to provide plenty of open space. They’ll likely include some activity if they have the room. If a volleyball or tennis court is out of the question, something as simple as a ping pong table will provide something to keep them (and their guests) from becoming too restless.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

Taureans are certainly grounded individuals but make no mistake; they want their comforts. While color-wise, they will be drawn to earthy tones that make them feel calm and relaxed, how they choose to decorate their outdoor space doesn’t stop there. They’ll go out of their way to ensure everything they could want is within reach. A dining table with comfortable chairs, a grilling area for cooking outdoors, and even a small fridge full of drinks and other items wouldn’t be out of the question. They want to foster community, but one in which all their needs are accessible to them.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

Geminis know how to have fun with decorating, and that includes outdoor spaces. They don’t believe in sticking to traditional rules and aren’t afraid to incorporate contrasting patterns into their accessories. They want to break up any monotony that might attempt to settle into their patio area, so varying designs on pillows and rugs create an intriguing vibe that a Gemini lives for. They love to have a large amount of natural light, so they’ll open up space as much as possible. They want the flexibility to change their minds, so they’ll gravitate towards furniture that is light and easily movable (such as wicker or rattan).

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

When it comes to making the outdoors feel like home, leave it to a Cancer to bring the concept to life. They have a propensity towards romantic, intimate settings, and their outdoor space is no different. They want to create an atmosphere that draws people together, so they’ll be sure to have multiple seating options available to anyone who might come by. Decorative pillows and a sizable light-colored rug will help draw the elements together while providing comfort. Adding string lights as the main source of lighting is the perfect finishing touch to ensure their guests (as well as themselves) are perfectly relaxed.

Leo (July 23 to August 22)

Leo signs want you to check out their outdoor space, and they refuse to disappoint. They move towards royal-style colors, such as golden yellow or a vibrant purple, to stand out. Toss in some poufs with intriguing patterns to serve as seating, or to put your feet up while lounging in a large chair at the end of the day. A bar cart is the perfect fancy addition to the space, so they can entertain and host their guests regardless of their location.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22)

Virgos view their outdoor area as a place to work as well as relax. They rarely are ones to take breaks, so they cultivate that energy elsewhere. They’ll lean towards neutral colors that make the space feel open, but they still want a sense of privacy. Rather than throwing up curtains, they’ll invest in a vertical garden instead. The plants add the perfect amount of decoration while also keeping others from prying into their personal oasis.

Libra (September 23 to October 22)

Libras want their space to be at one with themselves as well as the world around them. They want balance and harmony, and won’t overcrowd the area with unnecessary things. They’ll grab plenty of single-seat options to create a balanced atmosphere, but will also incorporate a brightly colored rug to show off their lively personality. Adding touches of small plants, vases with flowers, and even photographs make the space feel personal. It merges their indoor designs with the outdoors, rather than making them feel separate and competitive.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21)

While most signs try to make their outdoor space as accessible as possible, Scorpios prefer a different route. They want to be able to enjoy the fresh air without compromising their privacy. Darker colors and darker furniture will be a must, with various candles or small lanterns providing most of the lighting. Adding some curtains to make the space more intimate might seem a bit much, but they like the option to have some alone time if they choose.

Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21)

Those whose sign falls under Sagittarius love to use their outdoor space to entertain. They like being at one with the world around them and will grab all sorts of unconventional seating options (poufs, bar stools, etc.) to make room for anyone and everyone. Grabbing some tall lanterns or even outdoor torches that stick into the ground will provide some whimsy without going overboard on the lighting, given they would rather check out the night sky anyway. They’ll also ensure they have an audio/speaker system so they can always have music playing in the background to keep the energy moving.

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19)

Contrary to popular belief, Capricorns don’t want to spend all day indoors. When it comes to their outdoor space, they want to be able to admire their surroundings but still hold clear boundaries. They’ll lean towards a minimalist vibe, with a couple of chairs and perhaps some hanging light bulbs for lighting purposes, but they want sleek lines and neutral colors to dominate. Seating that doubles as furniture will be a must, and bonus points if it can easily be put away to clear out more space when needed. They’ll have a small table to do their work on during the week, or to stack their collection of books that they’ve meant to get around to. Their space will be a place where they can work or relax if they choose, but it will have a specific purpose.
