Whether in the kitchen, the garage, or a home office, a pegboard can keep your items tidy while also serving as a design moment. Melissa Gugni, a professional organizer in the San Francisco Bay Area, likens pegboards to the “little black dress” of organization because they can be dressed up or down, depending on your storage needs. “I’ve used them in grimy garages and stylish offices, kids rooms, and closets,” she explains.  With Jackson and Gugni’s advice in mind, we searched high and low for quality pegboards, carefully considering materials, durability, weight capacity, and style (after all, they do hang on prominently on the wall) to determine which ones are up to our picky standards. Our top pick, the SKYFOOST Pegboard Wall Organizer, is incredibly versatile and has the feel of a custom-made pegboard without the hassle of actually having to build one, thanks to its individual square pegboards that piece together to create various shapes. But this pegboard isn’t the only one that impressed us. Up ahead, find the 11 best pegboards for the office, garage, and more! One thing to note: This is not the pegboard for heavy-duty storage solutions, as the boards are pretty lightweight and not able to hold an abundance of weight compared to metal or wood boards. The board also doesn’t come with included accessories, so you’ll need to source those on your own as you plan out your pegboard design.  Price at time of publish: $40 Beyond the board itself, what makes this pegboard even more customizable is all of the compatible accessories on GetQuark’s Etsy shop. These accessories aren’t just functional, they’re unique, stylish, and easy to curate for the best storage feature. Whether you choose the Entryway Key Organizer, the Kitchenware Organizer, and the Suspended Flower Pot Holder, you can transform this pegboard into something awesome that meets all of your individual needs. Price at time of publish: $133 The Azar Pegboard Organizer Kit comes with 70 pieces (yes, you read that right!), including two divider bins, two cups, and a variety of different pegboard hooks to house all of your office knickknacks and supplies. That means you can now find a home for your pens, sticky notes, paper clips, tape, and more! And, although office supplies aren’t super heavy, you won’t have to worry about weighing this pegboard down. It’s made from a lightweight yet incredibly durable plastic material. If you’re just starting out, we think this easy pegboard kit is the way to go. Price at time of publish: $59 Enter the Wall Control Galvanized Steel Pegboard Pack. This two-pack has an overall storage area of 7 square feet and can hold up to 200 pounds. On top of that, it can mount to concrete, making it a fantastic choice for garages, studios, and other utilitarian spaces. While it might be a tad industrial looking for some home decor preferences, the pegboard comes in 10 different colors, so you can choose an option that works best with your space and style.  While the durability and size make it absolutely worth it, the price tag is pretty high for two pegboard panels. For better value, we recommend opting to buy it as a kit with compatible accessories. That way you’ll get the pegboards and everything you need to actually hang and store your items. Price at time of publish: $70 Plus, it comes with 23 metal pegs and 6 bins for organizing smaller items like screws, nuts and bolts, and nails. If we’re being picky (and we are), our one complaint is the bin color. It only comes in yellow, which might work well for some style preferences, but others might need to purchase separate bins if the yellow doesn’t seem that appealing. Price at time of publish: $45 This attractive pegboard measures 24 x 30.25 inches and comes with shelves, clips, containers, and hooks so you can customize your pegboard to meet your needs. Best for an office, craft room, or dorm room, this board is super sleek! It’s made from durable fiberboard and comes with everything you need for a small pegboard. It’s worth noting that IKEA pegboards aren’t typically compatible with non-IKEA accessories. You can find some accessories on Etsy that are specifically created to fit into IKEA’s oval pegboard holes, but shopping outside of the brand may be a hassle. Luckily, IKEA has a lot of choices, including magazine holders, clips, and storage baskets! Price at time of publish: $56 While there are more stylish options out there, this one is the most durable, which is why it’s one of our top picks. The board is made up of four 60 x 15 inch panels, and despite the size, it only weighs 12 pounds on its own. It can fit universal (or ¼ inch) pegboard accessories and is ready for display as is, or can be painted and decorated, depending on the look you want. Price at time of publish: $91 This pegboard set features four 9.65 x 9.29 inch squares that piece together to create custom paneling. You can even purchase different colors for a more mix and match feel. Additionally, the pegboard kit comes with a variety of accessories, including four adhesive shelves and 24 hooks. Although it’s not a heavy-duty option, the pegboard is durable and perfect for bedrooms, entryways, offices, and living rooms looking for more functional shelving options. Price at time of publish: $21 Ideal for the bedroom, office, craft room, or dorm room, this durable 22 x 15.75 inch pegboard comes with several accessories, including shelves, peg hooks, and a large metal basket to store all of your essentials in a stylish and functional manner. Price at time of publish: $30 We love it because, in addition to being mountable to a wall, you can also attach this board to a Brightroom Storage Cart for something a little more creative and mobile. We’re thinking a pegboard cart might look pretty excellent in a kitchen, where you can roll around all of your baking tools, or maybe a craft cart, stocked with washi tapes all lined up. Albeit on the small side, the lightweight pegboard comes in three sizes—13 x 26 and 13 x 13 inches—so you can choose which one best fits your space. And, if you need a little more pegboard real estate, you can even mount several together to create a wall! Price at time of publish: $35 This pegboard is the ultimate garage organizer with its built-in design that allows for a tabletop space, shelving, and drawers for extra storage. Whether you’re looking for a pegboard to house gardening tools or need an all encompassing solution for power tools and woodworking machinery, then the Elfa Utility Garage Planting Pegboard & Shelves is it. And while the price is just as hefty, it’s built to last. Price at time of publish: $805

Weight Capacity and Hole Size

Once you determine the size of your pegboard, look at the weight capacity and hole size, which will tell you how much stuff you can actually get away with storing and what accessories will fit your board. Melissa Gugni, a professional organizer in the San Francisco Bay Area, says the standard pegboard hole size is 3/16 of an inch, however this can vary depending on the brand and design. For example, the IKEA SKÅDIS Pegboard holes are ovals, not round. That means they fit only IKEA SKÅDIS accessories. As far as weight is concerned, Gugni says the standard 3/16 inch pegboard holes should hold up to 100 pounds. For the most part, a pegboard should be able to carry between 50 and 100 pounds.

Material and Color

The pegboard material matters for looks, but can also make a difference in price and durability. Jackson says the best material for a pegboard is steel because it can hold far more weight than other options. Gugni says the more budget-friendly wood boards can hold up to 100 pounds. In addition to steel and wood, pegboards come in plastic, acrylic, and fiberboard (which we think has a more old school utilitarian vibe). “If you have a lot of power tools or other heavy equipment, metal is a better choice—it will hold up to 10 times the weight of a wood board,” suggests Gugni.  Of course, it’s also important to consider material (and its color) in terms of style when creating a pegboard moment in a home, especially in areas where you want something more elevated and stylish versus a garage feel.

Standout Features

Included Hardware and Accessories

When shopping for a pegboard, consider any add-ons that come with the board itself. First, you’ll want to make sure that the pegboard comes with hanging hardware (if it goes on a wall) so that you can easily install it in any corner of the room. While it’s not required, it’s also greatly appreciated when pegboards come with some or all accessories, so you don’t have to invest more money into your storage solution and you can get started with organizing right away. Included pegboard accessories are also beneficial because they are a guaranteed fit, as not all pegboards and pegboard accessories pair well together.

Framing

Framing is also important to consider (especially for more stylish areas of the home vs. the garage). Many pegboards have a canvas painting-like design, where the metal “folds” over the frame to sit flush against the wall, giving it a more minimalist yet finished look. But, some—especially customizable options on Etsy—come with frames. This standout feature has a more polished feel and could create a nice design moment, too.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Jessie Quinn, a contributing writer, covers everything from organizing solutions to home essentials for The Spruce. When researching the best pegboards, Jessie considered quality of material, durability, weight capacity, and style. She also tapped organizing experts Marie Jackson and Melissa Gugni for their insights on what makes a truly fantastic pegboard. “You can find acrylic or plastic pegboards from decor stores that are not suitable for tools or kitchens, but would be lovely for organizing accessories, jewelry, or other lighter things in an area of the house when a less industrial feel is desired,” says Gugni. If you are planning to get crafty and DIY your own or use pegboard accessories from another brand, Gugni says you need about 0.5 inches so that the accessories and hooks can be inserted properly.
