Material and texture: High-quality sateen with a subtle shine
I’ll be the first to say that I didn’t think I’d be someone who enjoys a sateen duvet cover, but after testing this design from Parachute for a week straight, I might just be a convert. After one night, I was hooked. The best thing is that, no matter how hot it is in your room, this duvet cover always feels nice and cool. Although Parachute doesn’t specify the thread count of any of their products—the company believes it is not a true indicator of quality—this duvet cover itself is made in Portugal from long-staple Egyptian cotton. For the uninitiated, long-staple refers to the length of the cotton fiber—the longer the fiber, the better the quality of the cotton. The real difference in feel between cotton and sateen is smoothness—sateen has a slippery, silk-like feel without the overly shiny appearance. An additional bonus is that this duvet cover’s material is OEKO-TEX Standard 100-certified, meaning you won’t be coming in contact with any harmful chemicals.
Design: Simple and luxe
There are no fancy patterns or of-the-moment colors available here—only white as well as three variations of grey. (We tested the slate shade.) However, despite the lack of options, the colors offered are sophisticated and won’t ever go out of style; they also make sense given the look and feel of the duvet cover. Think of it this way: If you’re adding a bit of shine to your bed, you don’t want to go overboard on the pattern.
Washing: Easy but wrinkles in the dryer
To clean this duvet cover, Parachute instructs users to machine-wash cool using mild detergent and then tumble-dry on low. We followed the instructions and didn’t have any issues—however, the brand does recommend using wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets, which is something we didn’t have on hand. One thing I will note is that this duvet cover will wrinkle if you leave it in the dryer for too long. Also, you can iron it on low heat if you so desire.
Durability: Potential for snags
In all honesty, it’s difficult to tell how this duvet cover would hold up with wear and tear over time. Since it’s made of cotton, you have to assume it’ll wash well—we washed it once, and the quality remained spot on—but if you have pets or manage to snag the fabric in any way, it would really throw off the entire look. I can’t say for sure since we haven’t had a problem so far, but I’ve had issues with sateen clothing snagging and running. It’s definitely something to keep in mind, especially if you have pets.
Features: Helpful corner ties
The button closures on this duvet cover could have been larger—and therefore easier to use—but the four corner ties were a welcome addition. Even still, I found I had to do a bit of mid-night wriggling to get the comforter back into place inside the duvet cover. There is also a small embroidered edge along the top end of the cover, which I felt was a nice touch. While this doesn’t add any functionality, it looks great when your bed is made.
Price: You get what you pay for
Ranging from $150 to $210 depending on the size, this sateen duvet cover is a little pricier than other similar styles from competitors. However, we believe this price makes sense given what you’re getting: a luxurious, high-quality product that’ll give your bed a certain je ne sais quoi.
Competition: A little pricier but still a standout
BrookIinen offers a sateen duvet cover for approximately $30 less per size. Both that and Parachute’s option are made from 100 percent long-staple cotton and are OEKO-TEX-certified. Brooklinen’s button closures a bit bigger and therefore easier to use, but ultimately, we feel you can’t go wrong with either model. Alternatively, if you don’t care about having semi-shiny bedding, you can save a few bucks by going with a plain cotton duvet cover from retailers like Wayfair and Bed Bath & Beyond for less than $50—however, be advised that at that price point, you’re probably not getting high-quality material.
