With over 40,000 customers giving the Mellanni 1800 Collection Microfiber Sheet Set a 5-star review, this set already had a lot of hype behind it. At just under $25, these sheets are certainly affordable, but I wondered if they could also be breathable and soft too. So, I slept on this set for three weeks to find out if they lived up to their reputation.

Material: Brushed microfiber

While the material, 100% microfiber, is soft and airy, it’s also thin and a bit slippery. The bottom sheet moved around with me when I tossed and turned in bed, sliding around on the mattress if it wasn’t pulled as taut as possible around the bed’s edges. The sheets are also very thin and came out of the packaging with a few loose threads along the bottom sheet’s elastic edge. There was also some slight pilling within a day of use. And, because the bottom sheet gets loose easily, it’s hard to keep it looking smooth. I have a dark cat, and her fur was difficult to brush off the soft material without a lint roller. That’s because microfiber is made to attract dust. It has a positive charge, which means it attracts any negatively charged particles around it (e.g. dust and dirt). The material is great if you want to clean your house without chemicals, but not so good to keep clean as bedding.

Texture: Soft but slippery

The Mellanni promise on this sheet set is “silky soft, crazy comfortable, and affordably luxurious.” Yes, the sheets are soft and comfortable, but to expect them to feel like luxury sheets is a little bit of an overstatement, especially since you’re getting them at such a low price point. The set is a great bang for your buck if you’re interested in very affordable soft sheets, but you shouldn’t expect this bedding to be as durable as a pricier, thicker cotton set would be. Sheets like this are more likely suited for dorm or kids’ rooms because they’re comfy, soft, and wrinkle-resistant. See more reviews of our favorite cooling sheets available for purchase.

Washing: Surprisingly durable

Despite my low expectations for the sheet set’s durability because of the thinness, the pieces came out of the wash actually looking a little better than how they went in. I didn’t notice any more stray threads or pilling that had been there pre-wash, and the wash and dry cycles smoothed out the creases that had been imprinted on the sheets in the packaging. I washed them with like colors according to the instructions on the label, and there was no shrinkage or fading.

Thread Count: None

These sheets are 100% polyester, so there’s no thread count. While the information is not listed on Mellanni’s site, microfiber sheets are measured by GSM (grams per square meter), which is the weight of the fabric, rather than thread count. Take a look at other product reviews and shop for the best high thread count sheets available online.

Price: Almost unbeatable

You probably can’t find a less expensive set of sheets that are as soft, sturdy, and low-maintenance as this one. Even though they’re thin, they’re not flimsy or transparent. The main element I didn’t like was the feeling that they were sliding around under me rather than staying completely in place on the mattress. And even though they didn’t get damaged in the wash, the stray threads make it seem like they won’t wear quite as well as a sturdier set. All that is to say, these sheets are a steal for the price as long as you don’t have the highest expectations for their longevity and maintenance. They might be a better option for a child’s room or in a room you don’t use as often, like a guest room or in a grown-up child’s room, so that they don’t have to endure a lot of use and washings.

Competition:

At under $30, these sheets will be hard to beat in the bedding market if you’re looking for soft, easy-to-care-for sheets. They do look like inexpensive sheets, though, and if you have different sheets priorities, like durability, luxury, and overall aesthetics, Mellani’s 1800 Collection Microfiber Sheet Set isn’t your best option.
