Over-Scaled Chandeliers
Chandeliers are already known for making a major impact in any space, but why not really add some visual interest to a room by going extra big? “We love the dramatic impact that an over-scaled, multi-tiered chandelier makes, especially in the work of lighting designer Lindsey Adelman,” Jason Bell, of Blackberry Farm Design, says. “The popularity of these huge pieces has really grown, even for use in smaller spaces, and we think that this trend will continue well past 2023.” Kate Davidson, of Kate + Co, agrees that oversized lighting as a whole will reign supreme next year. “Bigger is most often better— we encourage oversized lighting in most spaces,” she notes.
Plaster Lighting
Plaster lighting will be everywhere next year, says lighting designer Julie Neill. “It’s a natural material and its chalky white color is clean and fresh," Neill comments. And plaster pieces look wonderful in a range of spaces, she adds. “It can be applied to both traditional and more modern frames, so the look can be versatile. Light fixtures made of plaster are at home in a variety of spaces, from formal living rooms to outdoor porches.”
Layered Lighting
“In 2023, we will be seeing more layering of lights in interior spaces that offer more daily function and can create different moods within our interiors,” Amanda Shields, of Amanda Shields Interiors, says. Particularly, this will be the case in the bathroom, where we will see “more layers of different lighting throughout along with adding in back-lit mirrors,” she adds.
Pendant Lighting
We will see more pendant lighting next year and in new places, such as above the dining table— not just over the kitchen island— says Hannah Rasa of InSite Builders & Remodeling. A few styles, in particular, will be having a moment. “Glass pendants are popular for their translucence, airiness, and ability to coordinate with any style from contemporary to farmhouse,” Rasa explains. “Statement pendants in a variety of colors, shapes, and textures provide an overall impact, mainly by integrating finish accents and decor.”
Multiple Types of Lighting in a Space
If you love to mix and match lamps with pendants and more, you’re in luck. “Designing a space with a variety of styles and heights of light sources is now on trend,” says Sydney Marcus of Anthony Wilder Design/Build. “A collection of lighting solutions—mixing floor lamps with table lamps, recessed lights, and sconces—in a space can bring an added dimension.”
Special Table Lamps
Table lamps in particular are having a moment. “Statement lighting with can be achieved through custom lamps,” Marcus adds. “In a recent project, we used custom-painted lamps and they became the jewels of the space.” This news is great for renters, too, who may not be able to alter overhead fixtures as easily but can have plenty of fun with more portable pieces.
Outdoor Lighting
Think beyond your home’s interior when it comes to lighting in the new year. “Outdoor lighting is going to start making a big statement in 2023,” Linda Hayslett, of LH.Designs, says. “People will be wanting to create a mood outside with multiple hanging lights that will make a space feel magical and more interesting.”
Rattan and Rope Lighting
Love rattan? You’re not alone! “People have been gravitating towards more natural materials,” Hayslett notes. “We’ll see more lighting that reflects a more of a neutral, modern, boho style feel with materials like rattan, rope, cane, and wicker in bathrooms and kitchens with pendant lights and sconces.” Charles Pavarini III, of Pavarini Design, agrees. Natural materials such as ceramics, rattan, and blown glass reflect a more casual aesthetic with a departure from formality. “These elements—which are part of the popular Coastal Grandmother aesthetic, too—are going to remain in vogue in 2023.”
LED Lighting
Many designers cite LED lighting as something we will see more of in 2023. “Indirect lighting sources with integral LEDs are finally taking hold,” Pavarini says. “Gone is the allure of the visible Edison bulb and glowing filaments.” Zulma Puhl of TriVistaUSA echoes his sentiments, noting, “The lighting trend I see for 2023 is the continued use of LED lighting, not only because it continues to be energy efficient, but also because it gives designers the flexibility to creatively design a space.”
